Boston Ticknor and Fields 1863 First Edition Hard Cover Good
Good copy of first edition of this remarkable book, scarce in any condition and any edition. It contains two important and inspiring works, one work describes the author's travels in Oregon and Washington in the 1850's, and another work describes his travels in Panama (published posthumously). Includes a chapter on Chinook vocabulary. American Publishers Corporation noted on title page and on the ads at end of book. Green cloth boards with black blindstamped design on cover, same design on spine, lettering in silver on spine. Top gilt edge. 375 pp. and eight pages of interesting advertisements of "recently" published books at end. Old mending to adhere front and back hinges, spine separating from text block at contents page. Text block browning nicely. Top and bottom of spine frayed and bumped, bumped at tips and corners, back board rubbed. We specialize in books about Bellingham and the surrounding area. "Our lives forever demand and need visual images that can be symbols to us of the grandeur or the sweetness of repose....And, studying the light and majesty of Tacoma [Mt. Rainier], there passed from it and entered into my being,...a thought and an image of solemn beauty, which I could thenceforth evoke whenever in the world I must have peace or die." --Theodore Winthrop, The Canoe and Saddle, 1862
