Fine copy of the rare 1987 first edition, minor rubbing to the front and back covers. This is a stunning copy, the only first edition we have seen on the market. The book presents the fascinating story of the Northern Electric Railway. The book presents 210 profusely illustrated pages with five large fold out maps of railroad rights of way and plats at end. It presents the story of the building of the interurban in the early 1900's to serve the farming and "resort" areas around Scranton. Early area history noting the settlement of the rich agricultural areas north of Scranton is very interesting. The huge number of historic photographs and reproductions of historic documents make this a must have book for those interested in the rail line and/or the history of this area. The book presents first hand reminiscences of Walter C. Fine, whose father once operated the line. There are also chapters on the corporate structure of The Northern Electric, company litigation and financial facts, the Dalton Street Railway Company, the Northern Electric Street Railway Company and the Scranton & Binghamton Railway Company. Rare almost near fine copy of 1857 first edition in light green blind stamped cloth covered boards. Gilt lettering on tight spine. Written by H. Hollister, M.D., published by W.H. Tinson, Printer and Sterotyper, New York. Some foxing to early pages, lightly bumped at corners, a few surface marks, light fading to spine. 328 pp., frontis portrait of author Hollister, full page map of Capouse Valley. Hollister invested twelve years researching and writing this broad ranging local history book. This treasure sets forth Indian and geologic history of the Valley. Much is written about coal deposits, Indian tribes and the importance of Capouse Meadow. The author presents modern history beginning with the era in which the area was part of Connecticut. The first permanent white settlements in 1769 are described. There is a listing of Lackawanna Valley residents from 1769 to 1776 and biographies of prominent settlers. Much is written about early mills and forges. There is a significant section on the history of Scranton. Much is written about Providence Borough and the Township of Carbondale. Interesting work about the The Delaware and Hudson Canal, the Pennsylvania Coal Company and other coal companies. This gem of book was reprinted many times, updated and expanded, but the first edition is always the most important. This is the best copy we have seen on the market. Fine first edition in very good dust jacket, this book was not reprinted. It was privately published by the author in 1973. Tan cloth boards, tight binding, 150 crisp pages with black and white photographs. Blue dust jacket is scuffed front, rubbed at tips, a small closed tear top and bottom of spine, light rubbing to edges, the front upper left quadrant shows an old crease. The author was a Scranton attorney whose family was identified with the city's industrial development from the earliest days. Mattes served as City Solicitor, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, a founder of L.I.F.E. and Chair of the Municipal Airport Commission. There is interesting information about how Scranton developed on property owned by coal mining companies. The narrative of the origins of the mine cave-in and subsidence problems is very interesting. Much of the book is autobiographical based on family and personal experiences. The author presents a detailed history of Scranton and biographical information on the Mayor's of Scranton. There are numerous fine photo portraits of City leaders. We specialize in books about Scranton and the surrounding area.

Very good plus copy of this rare item, dated 1941. This is the only copy we have seen on the market in years. Green card stock with photos of four prominent buildings stapled to eight pages of Scranton history. The card stock is faded. There is a tiny closed tear at the bumped lower left corner. This very detailed history was written by Thomas F. Murphy, Associate Editor of The Scranton Times. The complete title of this work is History of the City of Scranton, Scranton Diamond Jubilee and Centennial Celebration 1941, History of Scranton's Founding and Incorporation of the City. Well written impressive compilation of broad ranging historic data. Sections include First Settlers New Englanders, Anthracite Basic Industry, Preview Celebration, Luzerne County Established, Abbott First Settler, Water Power and Charcoal, Coming of the Scrantons, Start In Building Mill, Contract For Rails and much more. Very good plus copy of this scarce first edition, published 1928. Tan stapled wraps and text are bright, minimal age toning. 32 pp. The date Feb 11 1929 is stamped on the upper right corner front cover, upper left corner back cover and upper left corner of page 32. On the back cover Withdrawn from MBNEH is stamped in small letters. The title page has the blind stamp of the N. E. Historic Genealogical Society. Inside back cover there is a small certificate noting in nice black ink handwriting that the book was given to the New England Historic Genealogical Society by the Lackawanna Historical Society, Scranton PA, hand dated Feb 11, 1929. On the index page two incorrectly published words are crossed out and on page 30 someone (presumably the author) corrected a date in pencil from 1819 to 1919. The booklet contains extensive information about the Lackawanna Historical Society, well researched narrative of the history of Lackawanna County, a long poem titled The Vale of Lackawanna, another long poem titled The Roaring Brook and extensive biographies of the first four presidents of the Lackawanna Historical Society. This is a very nice association copy involving the Lackawanna Historical Society and New England Historic Genealogical Society. In 1930 this booklet was compiled into a book with other articles. Near fine copy of this rare first edition, published 1929. Deep dark green stapled wraps and text are bright. 31 pp. The gilt lettering on the cover is faded. The letters vol* are written in upper left corner, but are not very noticeable. Inside cover, upper left corner, written on three lines: Presented by Rob. D. Rousheim, 4-20-60, otherwise fine. There are nice photos of the Lackawanna County Court House and plaza in 1883, several important buildings with ties to the Jermyn family, excellent photos of a young John Jermyn and Mr. Jermyn decades later and a photo of Mayor E. B. Jermyn. The preface sets forth the history of the establishment of Lackawanna County. This pamphlet is the program and speeches given at the Lackawanna Historical Society May 25, 1882 banquet celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the County. There is significant first hand historic detail in the speeches. There are speeches by Mayor E. B. Jermyn and the County Commissioner. There is a biography of John Jermyn, the dedicatee of this pamphlet. We have not seen another first edition of this pamphlet on the market for years.
